I've never seen fabric quite like this anywhere else. I bought it to do 18th C. I thought that the subtle stripe would be just perfect, especially once you start adding all the ruched bits and furbelows. Overall, it looks, feels, and behaves more like a taffeta but there are a few small slubs so I felt I should call it a Dupioni, although I suppose a Shantung might work too... Either way I thought that $10 a yard was worth it for this gorgeous stuff, and if I didn't absolutely have to get rid of so much of my fabric I would keep this one.

The colour is an unusual (but attractive) shade and is difficult to describe and photograph accurately. For lack of better terms it could be called a pinkish clay colour or a rather brownish-grayish mauve. However, if the colour isn't to your taste, it dyes beautifully. One package of the Jacquard machine dye ("Crimson") turned this approx 2yd piece a rich raspberry colour. |

For some reason, the colours of this fabric is incredibly frustrating and will not capture true by camera or scanner. The red is a rich almost crimson red, and the bronze is definitely a bronze colour (althoug not metallic in any way) rather than an ocher. This interesting brocade could be used for a number of different time periods but whichever you decide to use it for, the results will be head-turning with this fabric. This fabric was somewhat stiff so I tossed it in the washer on cold and then in the dryer on low to see if it would drape better after and it did. I would recommend washing it again on a higher temperature before use, because you never know when some idiot is going to walk by with some blueberry jam and dump it on your outfit and you want to be able to wash it...even if you don't normally do so. Anyway, it shrank a bit, and was a nuisance to iron but was completely worth doing because it still has the texture of a damask but has some drape to it as well. Truly lovely stuff. |

I love silk in pretty much all its incarnations but this is one piece I love. It has texture, drape, weight, and a certain tactile quality that so many of the lighter-weight silks lack. This piece just makes you want to roll yourself up in it and revel in the feel. Anyway, it is a broadcloth that has a ribbed appearance due to a heavier weft. It is most certainly on the heavy side of "medium" in weight, and should wash up beautifully. |
